IUGG

ÖGK

On the invitation of Dr. W. Lenhardt (Austrian national delegate to the IASPEI), the members of the ANC gathered at the Conrad Observatory (COBS) of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) for their annual meeting. The head of the COBS, Dr. R. Leonhardt, welcomed the members of the ANC and gave an outline of the history of the ZAMG and its aims and presented the geophysical and geodetic instruments that so far have been set up at the COBS. The guided tour included a visit to the heart of the COBS, a tunnel of 150 meters equipped with a whole variety of instruments:
Several seismometers
Borehole seismometer
Superconducting gravity meter GWR C025
Absolute gravity meter FG5
Nearby the COBS a GNSS permanent station of the European Permanent Network (EPN) of EUREF is situated, operated by the Austrian Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV) in Vienna.
Apart from the seismic observatory, several geomagnetic sensors are being installed at the Conrad Observatory. The new part of the observatory is currently in the final stage of its construction and will boast a tunnel that will finally have a length of 400 meters.

During the ANC meeting the following topics were addressed:

• Preparation of the IUGG General Assembly 2011 in Melbourne,
• Membership in the ANC,
• Information exchange.

The Austrian National Committee was very pleased to welcome Dr. Ali Ismail-Zadeh, Secretary General of the IUGG, to this meeting, which was the perfect platform for the exchange of valuable information between the members of the different associations of the IUGG in a very relaxed atmosphere.
Recent natural disasters have shown very clearly that the regular exchange of information and of results achieved in various fields of geosciences are indispensable for research on climate change and natural hazard prevention.
