Meeting of the Austrian Geodetic Commission |
![]() |
This year’s second meeting of the ÖGK was held at the BEV.
On that occasion Mag. Robert Edelmaier, head of the Department E2 of Metrology within the BEV, gave a short introduction to the tasks that metrology has to fulfil in Austria. He explained that a highly developed measuring technology is a basic prerequisite for progress in general and a high standard not only in areas such as trade, industry, science, the health system but also the protection of the environment. Consequently, an efficient national metrology system represents an indispensable part of a highly industrialised nation’s infrastructure.
In Austria, the Metrology Service of the BEV is at the top of the national metrology system and authorised to provide these fundamentals. The service maintains the national standards for the realisation of the legal units of measurement and ensures their international equivalence and recognition.
Within the scope of the Physico-Technical Testing Service (PTP) the legal units of measurement are disseminated through calibration by comparing measuring instruments with the national standards.
Dipl. Ing. Helmut Skorpil then informed the visitors about “Absolute Long Distance Measurement in the Air”, a European Metrology Research Project (EMRP) whose aim it is to develop a new device measuring the distance, which will be able to reach an accuracy of 10 -7over a distance of 1000 metres. However, it is not only accuracy that is being aimed at. The project also wants to put the traceability on the measurements
The final guided tour of the newly built laboratory of the Metrology Service in Arltgasse, 1160 Vienna, presented the different labs for measuring length, temperature and electrical resistance.
What aroused the visitors’ special interest was the “Optical Frequency Comb-Generator”, which serves the representation of the metre. This instrument is one of five worldwide that are used to calibrate lasers.

Award ofVening Meinesz Medalto Prof. Harald Schuh |

The Vening Meinesz Medal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), was conferred to Prof. Harald Schuh from the Technical University of Vienna for his work in the field of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and his important contribution to geodetic space research. This medal has been established by the Division of Geodesy of the EGU in recognition of the scientific achievements of Vening Meinesz.
Prof. Schuh has achieved a deep understanding in the complex dynamics of the Earth's rotation, with respect to the related processes covering Earth orientation, geophysics and astrophysics. Moreover, Prof. Schuh used VLBI for the realization of a kinematic inertial reference system and pushed the steady improvement of VLBI measurement technology and analysis.
After the award ceremony Prof. Schuh gave the Vening Meinesz Medal Lecture with the title: VLBI - A Fascinating Technique for Geodesy and Astrometry.
Bestowal of the Friedrich Hopfner-Medal to Dr. Manfred Buchroithner
To appreciate the merits of Friedrich Hopfner, Professor for Higher Geodesy at the Vienna University of Technology from 1934 to 1949, in the field of International Geodesy, the members of the “Österreichische Kommission für die Internationale Erdmessung” (now Austrian Geodetic Commission) donated a Friedrich Hopfner-Medal for extraordinary achievements in the field of geodesy.
Every four years, in commemoration of the achievements of Friedrich Hopfner, the so-called Friedrich Hoppfner-Medal , donated by the members of the Austrian Geodetic Commission, is conferred on a worthy scientist for outstanding achievements in the field of geodesy.
In their meeting on April 28, 2010 the members of the Austrian Geodetic commission agreed to endow Prof. Dr. M. Buchroithner, TU Dresden, with the precious award.
The highlights of the bestowal ceremony, which was held at the Ferdinand Eidherr Saal of the BEV on November 10, 2010, were the award presentation by rector Dr. Peter Skalicky, and the laudation given by Dr. Georg Gartner, as well as the conferment of the medal carried out by the president of the Austrian Geodetic commission, Dr. Harald Schuh. The ceremonial lecture with the title “Cartography - an Integrative, Independent and Fascinating Science” was given by Dr. Manfred Buchroithner.
Prof. Buchroithner is the latest addition to a row of worthy laureates:
Dr. Karl Killian (1978), Dr. Karl Ramsayer (1982), Dr. Hellmut Schmid (1986), Dr. Fritz Brunner (1990), Dr. Heinrich Ebner (1998) and Dr. Thomas Wunderlich (2002).
